Here's the story:

You begin as chairman of the fledgling Paston Valley Lines, a branch line chartered to connect up with the B&O and funded as a subsidiary. You've got to live up to your charter, and make this connection, but really the potential is there for a larger railroad! If you can link up to Winchester, then you'll be on your way to viability. You'll have opportunities to decide whether or not to let the B&O sell off its interest in your company, as they find themselves struggling to make ends meet. Norfolk & Western, on the other hand, sees your line as a potential source of Shenandoah Division traffic, and will offer to help you out, in several ways. However, if N&W gains a controlling interest, then you may have to finish the game as a branchline of N&W. You can win as a B&O property, as an independent railroad, or as a N&W line, it's your choice.

Your locomotive fleet will also depend on these choices, as N&W has its own ideas about locomotive design and can offer some engines from its Roanoke shops. As long as you remain under B&O control, you'll mostly get their hand-me-down engines.

Your initial charter is as a RAILROAD, not as an industrial conglomerate, so if you own any profitable companies you will have to pay out most of the profit they generate as dividends each year. Spend your money on track and trains!

I created this as an aid to my model railroading activities, as I wanted to test and see whether it was actually feasible to build a railroad to connect up the cities that I have chosen for my fictional prototype. You must cross the Appalachian ridges which form the state line of Virginia. To my surprise, I found several potential routes, all of which can be built with a 2% max grade, even 1% in most places. For extra challenge, try restricting your grades to such realistic amounts. The topography here is rather accurate, modeled on USGS DEM's.
